Beautiful Waterfalls in Hawaii

The Big Island of Hawaii hosts a number of amazing waterfalls, located around the island with many of them near the city Hilo and if you are visiting this beautiful island you don’t want to miss out on visiting some of them.

Akaka Falls that is located about 10 minutes drive north of Hilo is an amazing masterpiece of natural beauty. To get there you have to do about half a mile of hiking through the rain forest and then you arrive at this 420 feet tall waterfall, with water cascading down into a blue pool.

Along the trail you also find the smaller but still remarkable Kahuna waterfall and if you have time for only one waterfall hike, this is probably the one you want to go for. It not only gives you opportunity to see two of the most gorgeous waterfalls in the whole state of Hawaii, the hike will also provide you with the experience of the diverse nature at the Big Island.

On the north side of the island you find Waipi’o Valley. Here you find a lot of cascading waterfalls along the sides of the valley together with nature that is so lush it has an almost magical feel to it.

To reach the valley you can go by car and some of it can be viewed from there, even though it’s highly recommended to get the hiking boots on and explore the area on foot. Among the hundreds of waterfalls found here, cascading down the mountainsides is Hi’ilawe, which is one of Big Islands most cherished waterfalls.

Near Hilo is another spectacular waterfall, called Rainbow Falls. It drops about 80 feet into a huge pool of turquoise water. This waterfall is easy to get to, simply a short drive from Hilo and you can drive all the way upfront to it. To get the most stunning view of the falls, get there early in the morning and take a hiking trail for a few minutes and watch the sun rise over the lush rain forest surrounding this gorgeous waterfall.

North of Hilo, a bit further away than Akaka, is the World Botanical Garden. In this garden is a three level waterfall that is called Uma Uma Falls. The water pours gently into the tranquil pools and this in combination with the surroundings can give you the feeling of having arrived to paradise.

These are some of the beautiful places where you can enjoy the wonder that a cascading waterfall is while at the Big Island.
