Father’s Day is coming, and what Dad really wants is another…. tie? Of course not; what Dad wants is fun and luxury, and perhaps even a touch of adventure. Here are some great bed and breakfast stays that will beat a tie any day.
A Father’s Day Trip Back in Time
If Dad is a history buff, then a stay at the Portobello Inn Bed & Breakfast is a must. Located in Herkimer N. Y., this 1840s Italianate mansion is resplendent with colonial charm and elegance. The rooms are tastefully decorated with classic furniture, the wraparound veranda looks out on hillsides that will remind you of Tuscany, and the property even has the original 1760 homestead still on sight! This is a place where Dad (and Mom) can truly unwind and relax.
Calling All Cowboys
The 1859 Historic National Hotel in Jamestown, Calif., has been hosting guests since the days when gold miners filled its rooms. Its colorful history includes Prohibition-era raids by the government, days of legalized prostitution and plenty of gambling. While modern guests need not worry about such notorious activities, the inn does have its own ghost, a friendly spirit known for slamming doors and turning lights on and off.
Dad will not only appreciate the hotel’s colorful history, but its beautiful guest rooms, as well. Each of the rooms is individually decorated in period style with antiques. The rooms include a private bath, but there is also a Soaking Room, where guests can relax in antique clawfoot tub. After a full, buffet breakfast, head out into the historic town and visit Gold Rush sites or drive to spectacular Yosemite National Park.
Enjoy Ocean Breezes and Romance
The White Doe Inn, nestled in Manteo, North Carolina, on Roanoke Island, is a perfect spot to pamper Dad. The National Register Victorian boasts guest rooms decorated with a mix of family heirlooms, antiques and fine reproductions. Each room has a fireplace and plenty of special amenities, such as fluffy bathrobes, designer bath products and CD players with a selection of romantic music. Four-course gourmet breakfasts include homemade cereals and freshly baked breads. In the afternoons and evenings, the innkeepers serve a selection of delectable desserts. The seashore is just a few minutes from the bed and breakfast.
Get Dad Back to Nature
With a name like La Belle de la Riviere, Dad might assume that this Newaygo, Michigan bed and breakfast is filled with frill and finery. Ok, we admit it is, but it also is a fantastic place for Dad to enjoy a myriad of outdoor activities. Located on the Muskegon River, guests can partake in fishing, hunting and plenty of watersports just minutes from the bed and breakfast. Canoe and bike rentals are available nearby, as are stables and golfing. After a day of enjoying the outdoors, come back to the inn and relax in the historic 1871 mansion’s guest rooms, which are decorated in period Victorian style. Each morning, guests are treated to a gourmet, French-style breakfast.
