Holiday Destination: Spain-Balearic Islands
The Balearic Islands is a Spanish archipelago famous for its beautiful beaches. Indeed, it is one of the best places to go swimming and scuba diving. These are not the only activities available on the islands, though. In fact, you should be able to find plenty of fun and interesting things to do while spending your holidays in the Balearic Islands.
The island of Majorca, also known as Mallorca, offers many activities since it is the largest of the Balearic Islands. While there, you can take a leisurely stroll through Mondrago Natural Park while admiring the stunning scenery or the abundant orchids. The park is most popular for its bird population, though. In fact, it has earned the status of being an ‘Area of Special Protection for Birds’, so don’t forget to get your binoculars so you can try to catch a glimpse of some rare bird species.
There are many other places to tour in Majorca during your holidays in the Balearic Islands, as well, such as museums, fortifications and religious architecture. These include the Royal Monastery of Valldemossa, where Frederic Chopin and George Sands once stayed; the Palma Cathedral, which is a magnificent example of Gothic archictecture; and the Can Planes Museum in Sa Pobla, which is a museum of toys and contemporary art.
There are many things you can do in Minorca, too, which is the island right beside Majorca. Watching a horse show at the Club Escola Menorquina or Ganaderia Son Martorellet is recommended, where you can see the Menorcan horses perform their own style of dressage. These purebred black horses are the pride of Minorca. You can watch horse races on the island, too.
You can also enjoy a lesson in prehistory and archaeology in Minorca by visiting the settlements of Talati de Dalt, Torre Llafuda and Trepuco. These prehistoric settlements date back to the Talayotic period, from 800 to 400 BC, and are noted worldwide for their megalithic structures.
There are more archaeological remains to be found on the island of Formentera. Although the smallest of the Balearic Islands, Formentera is the site of Ca na Cost, a remarkable collective megalithic tomb dating back to the Bronze Age. This tomb is certainly worth visiting during your holidays in the Balearic Islands. Afterwards, you can ride a bicycle to the lighthouse at Sa Mola and enjoy some of the island’s breathtaking scenery.
Finally, make sure you spend at least one night in Ibiza, which has a legendary nightlife. Here, you can find the best clubs and the best parties, including water and foam parties, which can last until 6am. If you’re with your family, though, or on your honeymoon, you can still enjoy staying on the island by catching one of its many concerts or theatrical productions.
Like Spain, the Balearic Islands can provide a great gastronomic experience, too. It also has some amazing festivals of its own. Make sure you sample all these during your holidays in the Balearic Islands for a truly worthwhile vacation.
