If you want it thicker next time, you could decrease the tomato juice to your liking. So glad it was a hit for the game!

I made this yesterday in the crock pot for the big game and everyone loved it, but it was quite soupy, not as thick as I would have liked. Should less liquid be used if using crock pot?

Hi Tina, yes, the tomato juice is instead of water since it adds more flavor. No water is needed if you use tomato juice. If you want a substitute, you can use 2 cups of tomato sauce mixed with 2 cups of water. Enjoy!

If so how many cups of water?

Great recipe but I’m looking for how to make just chili beans alone to replace canned chili beans. Do you have one?

This is a great recipe ! I’ve made this about 4 times, I personally drain the beans because the extra liquid caused it to need to be cooked way longer than 3 hours. I ran out of ground beef and had to use Italian sausage instead, now it’s my go to. I also add andouille turkey sausage instead of ground pork for a little razzle dazzle. The seasonings are perfect, no need to adjust in my opinion.
