What is the best lettuce for lettuce wraps?

You can use any type of green leafy lettuce for lettuce wraps, but popular types of lettuce include Boston bib lettuce and romaine hearts. The great thing about lettuce wraps is that they are easily modifiable when it comes to the filling and the wrapping.  Cabbage leaves would also be a yummy substitute.

Make Ahead Instructions:

All of the veggies can be chopped ahead, and the sauce can be made 2-3 days in advance. This is a great recipe for meal prep, as leftovers will keep in the fridge for several days and taste great reheated.

Recipe Variations:

  • Vegetables: This recipe is easily adaptable to use what you have in your fridge. Add other chopped veggies, like celery, bok choy, bean sprouts, shredded Brussels sprouts, zucchini, or summer squash. Sauté the veggies until tender when you add them to the skillet. If you add a lot of extra veggies to this recipe, you may want to make a little more sauce.
  • Meat: Substitute the chicken for ground turkey or pork.
  • Vegetarian: Substitute the meat for tofu, or leave it out completely, adding extra veggies instead.

Best Thai chicken wrap recipe in the universe. My family asks for it at least once a week! Thanks for the great recipe!

  2. 5 stars
We had a great lettuce wrap recipe, but these looked amazing and did not disappoint. Delicious and husband approved. I think we have a new favorite.

  3. 5 stars
We love lettuce wraps and happy to find a healthy recipe that not only tastes good, but tastes really, really good. It’s also quick and easy to make. Thank you!

    1. The calorie count is for the entire recipe divided into four servings. So, if you end up making four wraps, one wrap is a serving. If you make eight smaller wraps, then two wraps count as one serving. It’s all about how many wraps you make with the filling. Hope this helps, and enjoy your lettuce wraps!

  4. 5 stars
Yum! This got a thumbs up from everyone in the family! I used half the sauce and added a little lime juice and Thai cashews. Just wonderful. This is going in the regular rotation.

  5. I substituted turkey for the chicken and it was excellent! The sauce is so flavor packed. When I make this again, I’m going to add peanuts for some added crunch and use smooth peanut butter. Thank you for this recipe!

  6. WOW! So damn delicious and so easy!

I bulked up the veggies, added lime juice, used ground Turkey, and did a 50/50 mix of the G Hughes Sugar Free Thai Chili and the “sugary” Thai chili in my sauce.

This will be in my regular rotation going forward. I ate have the skillet. 🙈

  7. 5 stars
Soooo good! Sooo fast and easy! The only tweak I made was I added chili garlic sauce, which has a bit of a kick, instead of red pepper flakes. I love heat:). This will be my new go-to weekly meal! Thank you!

  8. Really loved this. Stuck close to recipe, but added some lime juice to the sauce. Had leftovers, so planning to toss it cold with romaine lettuce, some fried vermicelli rice noodles, and more of the sauce to get a yummy entree salad.

  9. 5 stars
I don’t normally take the time to comment or review a random recipe online but wow. This was easy to follow, hard to mess up, and absolutely delicious. Might add peanuts next time! Maybe lime too. But so so so yummy as is. Made for my husband and I, and had some left to take to work the next day!

  10. 5 stars
This was my first TBFS meal, and it was so good! Easy and quick to make. Used turkey instead of chicken. I added some chopped peanuts for crunch and a squeeze of lime. My kids (5&2) ate seconds of it! Will make again!

  11. 5 stars
So good! I had Hummus so I added that to the lettuce, everything else was as recipe was written. Will be adding this to our dinner rotation.

  12. 5 stars
The thai chicken lettuce wraps will be a regular dinner I start making, but I will double the recipe because I want leftovers! So good 10/10!!!

  13. Did you change this recipe to ground chicken from chicken thighs? I used to make your lettuce wraps and I swear it called for thighs, but now I can’t find that recipe. Thanks!

    1. I did update the recipe to use ground chicken (I used to use breasts, but this is much simpler). You can still finely chop up chicken if you’d rather do it that way–the recipe is the same otherwise.

  14. 5 stars
A quick and easy dinner to put together that was enjoyed by all! This was a real winner of a dish and will be made again.

  15. 5 stars
Made these tonight and they disappeared SO quickly! My husband just kept saying, “this recipe is a winner!” Will be making these again soon.

  16. 5 stars
This was a huge hit! Made quantity for 8 servings, used Trader Joe’s sweet chili sauce and a package of shredded cabbage/carrots to make life easy. 2 packs ground chicken, and 1 entire bunch of cilantro. Delicious and gone!

  17. 5 stars
Wow, this is great! I like the sauce the best. Added a little lime juice to it for acid. I am taking it for lunch tomorrow and will make it again.

  18. 5 stars
these are a amazing, simple and tasty. I like a little more heat so I added jalapenos they also added nice crunch with the lettuce. definitely make again for may family.

  19. I made this tonight and it was absolutely amazing 😋 I used a bag of coleslaw for the cabbage portion and ground ginger in the sauce. Followed the recipe to a tee and it was delicious! I don’t feel that way about many online recipes, I normally have to doctor them up a bit but this one was perfect. Definitely will be making again. Thank you!

  20. 5 stars
    This was FANTASTIC!!!

Thanks so much. I didn’t cook the carrot, green onions, and cabbage. Also, I added some small diced hot house cucumber. I like the uncooked freshness and crispiness of the veggies.

  21. This turned out delicious! I also added some chicken bouillon and a can of diced water chestnuts. And I doubled the sauce. Thank you!

  22. 5 stars
The best recipe I’ve made for our family, we couldn’t stop eating them, the balance of flavor was perfect, I did put chicken ginger garlic pepper and onion in the food processor together and sautéed together. Thank you for sharing your recipe.

  23. 5 stars
I needed a last minute idea for supper/dinner. Rushed to store to pick up what ingredients I didn’t have and got to prepping and cooking. Turned out great and was very delicious. I did deviate by topping with crushed cashews and sliced avocados.

  24. 5 stars
The recipe was absolutely amazing. Of course, so was your German Chocolate Cake and Apple Crisp. Love watching your videos, also. You are prepared, explain the “whys” when necessary and present very well! Plus, you are an excellent cook! Wonderful recipes. Loved this one! The flavors were so tasty and very easy to put together. Thank You!

  25. 5 stars
once again, my house smells awesome (secondary benefit)!
    hubby actually made this one.
out of cabbage so used cabbage from a salad kit. out of lettuce. flour tortilla wraps also worked great.
we were pleasantly surprised by the kick in the flavor.

  26. 4 stars
We love this AND use a pound of chicken and double the veggies b/c we like it less saucy. Try it with cauliflower rice! YUM 🙂

  27. 5 stars
My whole family enjoyed this easy meal. We cooked it exactly as you created it. The sauce was our favorite! Yum!

  28. 5 stars
    This is DELICIOUS!
Question – I tripled the recipe, several kiddos skipped out on dinner, now I have a lot left over. Although I’m sure I’ll be eating if for every meal (it’s THAT good) do you think it would freeze well? The meat mixture of course, not the lettuce.
    Thank you!

  29. 5 stars
I use coleslaw ready mix that has cabbage, carrots etc. This makes it quicker for our family. They do sell shredded carrots as well if one wanted to cut down prep time. My whole family loves this meal even a picky teen eater that only likes chicken tenders 😉 This is always in our dinner rotation!

  30. 5 stars
Super delicious and fast! But please do yourselves a favor, at least double if not triple the recipe. I doubled it for three people (no way 1/2# of chicken was going to be enough) and even with doubling, it was demolished! Restaurant quality!

  31. 4 stars
This is a delicious recipe but it is NOT a 20 minute meal. I spent 2 hours cooking the meat, chopping the veggies, and making the sauce. Even while working on stages simultaneously. This is the 3rd time I have made it and it has been very time consuming each time. I will continue to make the wraps because they are so good but DO NOT go into it with only 20 minutes to get a meal on the table.

  32. Delicious!

I added shitake mushrooms, water chestnuts, rice cooking wine, and extra ginger. I also ran out of peanut butter, so I substituted tahini lol! This was so easy to prep and cook. I’ll definitely be making this again.

  33. 5 stars
Wish I could give this 10 stars!!!!! Absolutely delicious and so easy I thought I missed steps. It my go to meal now! Have got my sister, brother and mother hooked as well! I usually double the sauce (it’s so good)and put it over rice to round out dinner.

  34. 5 stars
My lovely Asian neighbor gifted me a case of the freshest young green leaf lettuce I’ve ever seen. She mentioned that she uses it for lettuce wraps. After re-gifting many heads to neighbors and friends, I searched for a recipe, and found this one. It was so much better than expected, and honored the beautiful lettuce. We will definitely have them again!

  35. 5 stars
I love this dish. Have made it many times. I use turkey mince instead of chicken and add more peanut, ginger and chilli. It’s so easy to tweak it to suit your own pallette.

    1. Ooooo… That may work for some but I would not do that. The sweet chili sauce is what gives it a uniquely Asian flavor. I’m not sure BBQ with ginger would work.

  36. 5 stars
Thank you for the wonderful recipe! I am 25, single, and trying to be more money conscious (I have a bad takeout habit.) These meal plans have been a wonderful way to keep my grocery bill under control. Since recipes are generally made for more than one, I save leftovers for the following day’s lunch/dinner. This recipe was especially delicious! Unfortunately, I recently developed a peanut allergy so I substituted Sunflower Seed Butter for Peanut Butter and it turned out great!

  37. 5 stars
This was great! Dad cooking dinner for Mom and kids. I’m not a fan of raw onions so I cooked them first for 5 minutes before adding garlic and chicken. I used hearts of romaine lettuce. I told kids it was a taco only with romaine. They ate it! I would recommend this for any cooking for first date. I really appreciated this recipe. Thank you again.

  38. 5 stars
This was delicious! I made a few changes: doubled the cabbage and peanut butter, quadrupled the ginger and soy sauce. The great thing about cooking for yourself is that you can customize it to your preferences. We’ll be making this recipe again!

  39. 5 stars
I made this for dinner tonight and it was definitely a hit. DELICIOUS???
My family said this recipe is a keeper.

  40. Excellent! If you want a little more spice … cut a jalapeño in 1/2 and sauté either 1/2 or all with some or with all the seeds…and let the olive oil get infused with it.. then add your chicken and vegetables. And keep the jalapeño in there cooking w it. We loved these! I also added clementine (orange) slices on the top when we served it. Yum!

  41. I have a picnic to go to and was thinking of bringing these. Can these be served cold. It seems like it could but wanted your opinion.

    1. Hi Lerai, did the wraps turn out delicious? I am also attending a picnic and will be eating them cold! Just wanted to hear your opinion.

  42. We had this tonight and It was absolutely delicious! I used romaine lettuce and it worked great❤️
    Thanks for the recipe😊🤗

  43. 5 stars
Delicious, quick & easy❤️ Use store-bought bag of broccolini which has purple cabbage & carrots to save time & money. Definitely making this again!

  44. 5 stars
Oh my Lord, this sauce is the bomb!
I actually did more of a rice topping style since I was working with almost wilted lettuce and leftover chicken — it was awesome! My repurposing was delish! Thank you for your recipe!

  45. 5 stars
I love this recipe!! I have made it a couple of times! The last time I wanted some bright color so I added yellow and red pepper at the very end so it was nice and crunchy. Totally amazing!!!

  46. 5 stars
This was quick to prepare and had excellent flavor. I left out the red pepper flakes and still ended up a tad on the spicy side. Served over rice but I’m sure the lettuce would have added a wonderful crunch!

  47. Made this with ground turkey and romaine. I also sautéed 2 Thai Chile’s (whole) instead of pepper flakes and removed prior to serving. It was awesome! Thank you so much for the recipe.

  48. 5 stars
Delicious and simple recipe! Husband loved it. Only adjustment I made was using 2 cloves of garlic instead of 4 and it still tasted great. I used a head of ‘butter lettuce’ which has nice big leaves and they worked well and was quite good. Definitely keeping this recipe and making this again!

  49. 5 stars
I tried this recipe for the first time and it was delicious. My preparation time and effort were minimal, the presentation was impressive, the dish was very tasty and mildly spicy but it was definitely a 5 star meal according to my husband. Will definitely have this again.

  50. 5 stars
Just made these after a search to satisfy my desire to eat healthy and still appeal to my household filled with boys! HEB does carry a wonderful sturdy lettuce wrap as mentioned above, and I decided to use the packaged slaw shredded veggies to save some time. I was a bit short on some of the ingredients, so I whipped cashew butter together with water and the ACV–it was delicious and did the trick along with the rest of the ingredients–I omitted the sweet chili sauce and my family still loved it–very forgiving and versatile dish! Absolutely delicious and the chicken was superb! Thank you for the inspiration!

  51. 5 stars
This is very good! I doubled the recipe and it was not too much for my family. I used ground chicken which cut down on chopping time. I added water chestnuts for extra crunch since my family loves them. I served it with quinoa instead of as lettuce wraps. This delivers the Thai food tastes you love in restaurants!

  52. 5 stars
10 stars! Absolutely delicious, so much flavor! Loved everything about it, didn’t add yellow onion, only green! HEB had these great lettuce scoops, really sturdy and perfect for this recipe! Amazing!

  53. 5 stars
Every member of my family loved these, even my daughter who complained at first before tasting them. If you really are pressed for time, you could probably use cole slaw mix instead of shredding your own cabbage and carrots,

  54. 5 stars
My family loved this. I added a teaspoon of fish sauce and substituted celery for the cabbage since I didn’t have any cabbage. 5 stars

  55. 5 stars
My husband loved these . He has been sick and said he wasn’t very hungry. He ate 2 and made himself 2 more.

  56. 5 stars
Great recipe. We’ve made it several times. Last time we added some cooked rice at the end and it worked well. We have also substituted celery for the cabbage another time. Every time it’s delicious and we never have any left overs go to waste.
Thanks for the very versatile recipe.

  57. So very good! I will be passing this recipe around to others! Just be careful of the red pepper. I added too much and it was a bit hot for my kids and I but my husband loved it. But the flavor was amazing. Next time I will just leave the pepper and make a spicy batch for my husband.

    1. Sure, if you don’t mind cold chicken (or you could just rewarm it for a minute before serving). Enjoy!

  58. 5 stars
This has been a regular on my meal plan for a long time. Probably for over a year. My young kids love it! (I just leave some aside with hardly any sauce) And I always use two packages of ground turkey. I just thought it was finally time to say thanks!

  59. 5 stars
I tried this recipe for the first time, and the whole family loved it! We will definitely have it again!

  60. 5 stars
We’ve made these many times and they’re amazing every time! Some times we change it up and have it over rice instead of in a lettuce leaf because I can find those frustrating to stuff. BUT don’t skip the lettuce! The crunch and fresh flavour really adds to the dish. We just rip it up and put it on top 🙂

  61. 5 stars
Seeing how there are already so many comments about this dish just shows how yummy this recipe is!! My family, including my 3 yr old daughter, LOVES LOVES this meal.
I tend to triple it so we can have leftovers for a few days and i also love to switch out the cabbage for zuchini. I could not say enough about how good this receipe is. SO YUMMY!!!

  62. curious about doubling recipes in the instant pot. the taco bowls for instance, can I double it in a standard size instant pot? Thanks! Love. your site.

  63. 5 stars
Lauren – My entire family LOVES these. I have made them every week for a month. They make awesome after school snacks. I’m about to write a blog post with my Favorite Things for Teachers. This recipe is one of my favorite 5 things.

    1. That’s wonderful! Thanks for sharing Carrie! I’d love to know what your other favorite things are 😉

  64. 4 stars
Made these to bring along as a dish to a friend BBQ. They went down a treat! Lots of fresh flavours and something colourful to add to the table. Delicious!

  65. 5 stars
First of all, I love your site! Your instructions are always so easy to follow and everything we have tried has been amazing. Not to mention how much we LOVE this recipe! We have made these lettuce wraps 3 times in the past two weeks. 🙂

  66. 5 stars
This was delicious! My husband and I enjoyed this very much! Looking forward to making it again.?

  67. Out of all recipes found online, these seemed the easiest… My husband like them! I just realized I forgot the peanut sauce ( I’m not fond of it) and he green onions, yet he gobbled up two servings. Not bad for a first time! He suggested less salt in the future but loved them otherwise.

  68. 5 stars
So yummy!!! I made a couple adjustments in the I used 2lbs ground turkeys for doubled the sauce. I had garlic chili sauce on hand so used that instead and added honey we don’t use soy sauce in my house so I subbed that for liquid aminos. This is so tasty and incredibly healthy!!

    1. I love your substitution ideas! I’m so happy you enjoyed them, and thanks for coming back to comment.

  69. 5 stars
I’ve been making these for a few years now… a total weeknight favorite! I’m just getting back into my kitchen after a few months of bad morning sickness… guess what was on my list first? Thank you for the recipe!

    1. I’m thrilled to hear that, thanks Marcy! They are one of my favorite weeknight meals as well. So happy you are feeling better–morning sickness is no fun.

  70. 5 stars
These are incredible! My new favorite healthy meal. I can’t get over how good they are and EASY. Thanks for the great recipe.

  71. 5 stars
I made these for my girls last week and tonight for valentine’s day I’m making it again for my husband and daughters..I’m also making the red velvet cookies for dessert…yum ☺

    1. How fun–that’s my kind of Valentine’s dinner 😉 Thanks for sharing Jillian. Hope you loved the red velvet cookies as well 🙂

  72. 5 stars
These were a great find, thank you so much for sharing! I made a batch on Sunday night to use for my lunches going forward during the week. Normally when I do this after the 2nd or so time I’m tired of the dish but not with these lettuce wraps! I used ground chicken and it was super easy to work with. Doubled the veggies. I also didn’t have sweet chili sauce when it came time to cook so I improvised with some honey and sriracha. Can’t wait to try some of your other dishes!

    1. I agree–this is one of those recipes I never get tired of! So happy you enjoyed it (I love the idea of meal prepping this!), and I hope you get to try some of my other recipes! Thanks 🙂

  73. 5 stars
Absolutely awesome! Only change wa I used 1/4 cup chili garlic sauce instead of sweet chili sauce because it’s what I had. It gave it a nice kick but warn guests before they automatically add something hot if they usually like it spicy.

  74. 5 stars
I made these tonight for dinner. The only change was I used ground turkey instead of chicken. They were a huge hit! My kids ages 13 and 16 loved them, they asked to have them for dinner again tomorrow. Thanks for sharing.

  75. I tried it …..it is delicious…….especially the peanut butter sauce……and its easy to make ………my husband loved it!

  76. I tried it …..it is delicious…….especially the peanut butter sauce……and its easy to make ………my husband loved it !shan

  77. Can you boil the chicken and shred it first? If I had chicken breasts what would be the best way? These look great!

  78. These were great. My only ‘complaint’ would be about serving quantities. I tripled the recipe to feed 5 people (2 men, 3 women), with leftovers for lunch. It fed us with a couple of us getting seconds but I expected there to be leftovers. Perhaps they were just too good and we ate too much 🙂

  79. wow….we made those last night…the wrap was just so delicious….Thanks for sharing this recipe….can’t wait to make them again….Probably next week !

  80. This is my family’s favorite Thai lettuce wrap recipe. I ‘lost’ track of the recipe one time and was in big trouble, ha. I finally found it again and have made multiple copies on multiple devices so as not to lose it ever again. The ingredients are so simple but the sauce is so delicious and gets better with multiple warmings even though it doesn’t last that long around here. Love it so much!

  81. These Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps are fabulous! With only minor modifications, I was able to serve this to my multiple food allergy kid. We had to leave out the peanut butter, but they were so good anyway. Next time I might add a peanut sauce dip on the side for those who want to add it later. This will definitely be added to our “favorite dinners” list.

  82. Made these for dinner last night…was looking for something a little different than our usual lettuce wraps. These were great! That peanut butter sauce was really something special. Can’t wait for left overs for lunch today.

  83. Sounds like a great recipe. I would suggest substituting the canola oil with coconut oil as it is much better for your body than canola oil.
    Will try it soon
    Thanks for posting

  84. Liked this a lot! Only change, I made was to use Sriracha instead of red pepper. Wasn’t super spicy, could have been hotter for my taste but my sister is a bit of a spice wimp.

    1. Hi Debbie,
You could try chopping the breasts into large chunks and then sticking them in your food processor. Just pulse 3-4 times until you get small little bits of chicken.

  85. We really liked these! If you didn’t want to go carb free you could totally serve this over brown rice. We found that it could have used an extra chicken breast to make the meal go farther, and there is plenty of sauce that would of covered it. Thanks for sharing, we enjoyed it!

  86. These are amazing! I was also looking for a different “chicken” recipe. I made these for my husband on Friday evening and – as I type- I am standing in my kitchen on Sunday evening making them again! They are so delish

  87. Oh yum! This sounds so fantastic! I’m so making these, when my husband goes out of town because he won’t eat them. They look to healthy. Rotten man.

  88. YUM Lauren! Those look amazing. I love chicken recipes that are a little bit different like this one, cause we eat a lot of the basic chicken dishes and lately I am just not in the mood for the same old!
