Far off the west coast of Scotland can be found a group of islands known as the Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles). In total there are over 200 islands in the group with only a very small percentage are inhabited. The bulk of the population can be found in the town of Stornoway on the largest of the islands, the Isle of Lewis. This article will take a look at Stornoway hotels and accommodation.
The Outer Hebrides area one of the most interesting places in Great Britain and, if you are staying in Stornoway hotels, you must make a special effort to visit the standing stones at Calanais. Unfortunately this famous stone circle (or rather a set of stones in a cruxiform shape with a central circle) are some distance from the town but there is a local bus service that goes to and from the area once a day.
Just around the corner from Calanais is Dn Chrlabhaigh which is one of the finest examples of an iron age broch still surviving today. Dn is the Gaelic word for fort as it is suspected that these strange conical shaped buildings performed some kind of a defensive duty rather like a keep in a castle. Over recent years there has been a move to name all places in the native language of Gaelic (fortunately they also appear in English on most road signs). Previously Dn Chrlabhaigh was previously known as Dun Carloway Broch.
Stornoway is a great place to stay while having a Hebridean vacation. It has all the facilities and amenities you should expect to see in a town that serves as the main administrative centre for the islands of the Outer Hebrides. There are lots of guest houses to choose from and all offer excellent bed and breakfast accommodation. Sadly the choice of Stornoway hotels is rather small but we have listed the main hotels in Stornoway below so that you can make an informed decision before booking online.
Top of nearly every list of hotels on the Isle of Lewis is the Caberfeidh Hotel. Long known as the finest hotel in Stornoway the Caberfeidh offers luxury accommodation in wonderful surroundings. Set in it’s own finely manicured gardens, with the incredible Lews Castle ground just across the road, the Caberfeidh Hotel is the choice hotel for those who enjoy luxury but prefer a quieter environment.
The Caladh Inn is on a much larger scale than the other hotels (the largest in Stornoway) and is an excellent place to stay if you are visiting the area on business. Being the most accessible hotel to the local airport, ferry terminal and bus station makes it also a great place to stay if you are a tourist visiting without their own transport.
Finally we take a look at the best looking hotel in Stornoway, the Royal Hotel. Built in 1850 the Royal Hotel is Stornoway’s most historic hotel retaining many period features (found in the front facing rooms). Found almost at the heart of the town the hotel’s Boatshed Restaurant and HS1 Cafe are extremely popular eating places of excellent reputation. With superb views out over the harbour this is the hotel to stay in if you like to be close to the action while enjoying comfortable accommodation.
Being the most luxurious and offering the best function rooms the Caberfeidh Hotel is the areas most popular choice, of Stornoway hotels, for wedding receptions and wedding dances. The rooms are also extremely popular for business meetings of all sizes and are often the venue for large sales and other events. Wireless broadband connections are available in the three hotels listed here, which offer a great many other services expected in top class hotels.
